HENLEY BBQ

NEXT DATE: SATURDAY 2ND JULY 2016

Held on the Saturday of Henley week (normally in Butler’s field behind the enclosures) this is the last alumni event of the rowing calendar. An informal but increasingly delicious affair, the BBQ has progressed to the point where it regularly outclasses its competition – as NUBC does on the water. Last year even Durham were attempting to join the party! (They were swiftly rebuffed) Food on the menu included Oyster tasting and Welsh Lamb.

Tickets for food are normally sold in advance but can be acquired on the day. Please pay attention to the website for specific details.

BLUE STAR DINNER

NEXT DATE: SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 2016

In the evening following the Head of The River Race, the club descends on Putney for a formal dinner aimed at reuniting alumni.  Usually held in the upstairs room at The Star and Garter, this promises to be a great celebratory evening, both for the crews involved and also those reminiscing.  Most of the attendees usually go on to the rowing clubs along the Putney embankment following the dinner to continue the party.

RUTHERFORD HEAD AND JIM LONDON DINNER

NEXT DATE: SATURDAY 5TH DECEMBER 2015

The first Alumni event of the academic year is always Rutherford Head, a 5K race over the Club’s home water. Starting just after the disused Scotswood railway bridge and finishing at the Newburn Sailing Club slipway, the course passes the Boathouse and goes under Newburn Bridge.

Perennially popular, in past years Newcastle crews have been ‘augmented’ with alumni rowers or Blue Star Club crews of alumni only (particularly reunion crews) have been fielded amongst the competition.  Rutherford Head is normally held on the last weekend of November or the first weekend of December.

In the evening after the race is the Jim London Memorial Dinner, normally located at a local hotel. James ‘Jim’ London was a popular member of the club who played an active part on many levels – rowing and coaching at the Club. A couple of years after graduating, he died from cancer. In his memory, and in his spirit of fully being part of the NUBC community, the dinner is held. Additionally, the Jim London Award is presented to an alumnus or other individual who it is felt has made a particular contribution to the health of the Club during their time with NUBC.
